May his memory be for a blessing

I met Dan Flax on Shabbat morning—August 14, 1993.

I had just finished up graduate school in July and was married on August 8. Ilana and I walked out of our new home at the intersection of Davis Avenue and Buckingham Drive and started walking eastward toward New Scotland Avenue. Dan rushed up Davis Avenue to catch us.

Dan immediately greeted us, “Welcome to town.”

I don’t remember the details of the conversation, only that I was a member of a Jewish Federation young-adult steering committee before reaching New Scotland Avenue. Over the course of an amazing forty-year career, that was who Dan Flax was.

Dan passed away this week. May his memory always be for a blessing.\
