We're inviting the community to join local clergy for a program and penitential prayers to prepare ourselves for the upcoming Days of Repentance. The program will include Havdalah, a film screening and discussion, and the Selihot prayers. The film we are planning to show is The Believer, directed by Sean Bean, and which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001, and stars Ryan Gosling in his first leading role. Gosling plays Danny, a Jewish neo-Nazi who struggles throughout the film with his past, his Jewish identity, and his hatred of the Jewish people. Bean gives us images of Danny in religious school where he struggles with the idea of a God who demands that Abraham sacrifice his son Isaac. A powerful contemporary midrash on the Akeida, this film will help us talk about Jew-hatred and our own experiences of the last year.
